Why Your Organization Needs a Bluesky Account Right Now

Not on Bluesky? Here's why you should be. [butterfly image, ELM logo]

Don’t miss your chance to be a big social butterfly in a small social sky, because the Bluesky door is closing.

Bluesky is a social platform that, frankly, looks and smells a lot like Twitter – yes, pre-X Twitter. The formerly invite-only social media platform no longer requires an invitation to join, and since the election, Bluesky has seen a veritable surge in new accounts, most of which are located in the US and UK.

We can speculate on the driving force behind this rapid growth in new users. On one hand, discontent with Elon Musk, both as a public and increasingly political figure and as a seemingly hands-on manager of X, is palpable. Users dislike how X has evolved (or, devolved as some may say) as a bot-riddled platform, calling it a “cesspool.” In fact, 68 Bluesky users explicitly called X a "cesspool" in just the last 24 hours.

Is it a hot take? Maybe. But whether or not you agree, you can’t ignore that users are flocking to Bluesky. Read on for our view on why you need a Bluesky account now. If only to avoid being left behind by the masses, you should run (not walk), to bsky.app to create an account for your business or organization.

Why do you need a Bluesky account now?

Take advantage of Bluesky's momentum.

The sudden growth in Bluesky accounts – from around 9 million in September to over 25 million as of the writing of this blog – is proof that Bluesky is here to stay.

Based on growth patterns of Threads and other legacy platforms, we’re predicting Bluesky will continue to see this rapid growth for the next 12-18 months before plateauing. While both Threads and Bluesky saw rapid growth amidst Anti-Musk sentiment, Bluesky has appealed to former Twitter and current X users in a way Threads hasn't been able to attain. Because it looks and feels a lot like the proven platform Twitter, those users are expected to gradually replace Twitter or X with Buesky as their platform of choice.

Bluesky can help your account grow if you get in early.

Bluesky comes with some major perks – as new users join Bluesky, the platform guides them to find accounts to follow. While the pool of relevant accounts is still small, you have the rare opportunity to be the big fish in a small pond (or, the brightest butterfly in the meadow, if you will). But the pond is growing, and other fish are joining your pool quite literally every day. You want to be the account that likeminded Bluesky users find as they join the platform. The best way to do that is to grow your following early while you have fewer competitors crowding your space.

As Bluesky grows, the door is closing on your ability to take advantage of the small pond effect. To maximize the opportunity presented by Bluesky's momentum, create your account right away. Below, check out a few of our tips for a stellar Bluesky account on day one:

  • Post consistently: The more posts you have early, the more established you’ll appear to new users.

  • Reuse content: Reuse evergreen content from your other channels to populate your post history.

  • Spread the love: Spread posts out to no more than once daily to maximize exposure.

  • Engage: While the platform is still growing, you have the chance to make a big impact by engaging with other accounts. Take advantage of this while you still can.

Setting up new platforms can be intimidating, but it can also provide a sense of freedom. Now is your chance to establish your brand with a strong presence from the get-go.
